The Lichtwer company had enjoyed enormous success in the late 90’s with the creation of a number of phytopharmaceutical products, most notably the KWAI garlic brand. Following a series of strategic mistakes and management changes the company was controlled by a banking syndicate. We acquired the business from the banks, in March 2004 for €35 million, restructured the management, adopted a strategy of out-sourcing sales and distribution and returned the business to growth and profitability by focussing on their core brands in the pharmacy channel. Exit was achieved by separating the manufacturing operations, sold to a contract manufacturer and the branded business was sold to German distributor Klosterfrau, for €70 million.
