Betapharm was acquired from Hexal with an innovative deal structure for about €300 million in March 2004 with 3i. The carve-out required the establishment of a stand alone company with new back office, financial and IT infrastructure. By re-modelling the unique sales force following the German healthcare reforms and implementing a new business development process to access new products, Betapharm was able to grow at double the rate of the market, becoming the fourth largest generic player in Germany with industry leading profitability. In the anticipated industry consolidation, Betapharm was sold to Dr. Reddy from India for €480 million in March 2006.
